Colors Glamorous To Celebrate

September is here. It’s time to start making your Christmas list and buying key items that help us transition from Spring-Summer fresh to Fall-Winter flashy and glamorous.
The coming colder season isn’t about glorifying the youthful fresh face; it’s this time we celebrate the more successful, elegant and intimidating older women in their 30s and above.
Lancome’s statement for Fall 2011 is St. Honore—the Parisian beauty where less is definitely more. Dewy-clear skin, healthy, flushed cheeks, black-lined upper eyelids, and succulent, semi-matte red lips.
“The shade of ultimate seduction, pure red, the star of the collection, is made majestic by harmony of delicate nuances: taupe, brown, gray and, of course, black,” Lancome press materials say. “A resolutely chic palette contrasting beauty with the audacity of a smoldering red. Eyes gravitate to the lips which are dressed in the most passionate red, from carmine to poppy, while eyes are intensified with a tender brown or gray smoky effect, delicately outlined with a fine line of graphic black. Perfect sophistication: nails that harmonize your lipstick when they are not playing the card of mysterious black.”
Key products include Le French Touch Absolu lipstick (P1,695), a silky formula rich in Pro-Xylane, which nourishes and plumps up the lips. Its case may be smaller than that of a traditional lipstick, but its contents are identical. May even be used as creamy powder blush for your perfect shade of red cheeks.
As for color, recommended is Red, absolutely inspired by “Shaker,” the first pure red lipstick from Lancome which was created in 1945, Lancome’s Aaron De Mey has created three variations designed around this most fashionable of tints:
• 100-Rouge 29, a slightly blue blood red, swathed in mystery. Great for the very light or dark skinned.
• 102 Rouge Faubourg, incredibly rich deep-orange red in red flecks of glitter. For those with yellow undertones, this color will also look great as blush. My idea of Christmas red.
• 104 Rouge Saint Honoré, this season’s star, is a passionate and provocative red, simply laden with pigments. This will suit most women of color with its deep berry and brown base.
Another key product is Maison Lancome (P2,595), an all-over face powder to give skin a healthy flush of color. It may be used as a blush on light to medium skin.
Ombre Absolue Palette (P2,495) is the classic smoky eye created in shades of black, white, medium and light silvery gray that will add drama to anyone, regardless of skin color and age.
Artliner in 01 Black (P1,695)  defines your upper eyelids with that sexy black line, which curves up at the tip with a ’40s-style graphic line, Lancome pays homage to its mythical eyeliner. It’s a tool that makes even the most novice hands skilled, able to create professional precision thanks to its easy-to-use properties. A child can actually perfect that sexy upper eyelid line, thanks to this.
The Lancome line will be available this month till December or until supplies last.

Music: Checking in with Ry Cooder

Ry Cooder's career has spanned five decades, with the only stylistic constant being exploration and change.
He came to prominence as a session guitarist in the '60s working with the Rolling Stones, Captain Beefheart, Taj Mahal and many others.
Since then, he's been best known as a visionary world music pioneer and an advocate for American roots music as an indigenous form. His new album is "Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down."
An interview:
Q: The title of the album is "Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down." What does it mean?
A: It's an invitation to have a conversation. Hang up the cellphone and let's talk for a minute, so I can tell you what I'm thinking. I like the line. It's a funny line.
Q: "Pull Up Some Dust" paints a grim picture of the state of affairs in this country. Is it a call to action, or more a therapeutic release for you on a personal level?
A: At this point in life, I'm 64, I guess I look back and say that all the music I've done was therapeutic in one way or another, or at least cathartic. It's what I do and all I ever wanted to do, but now we're confronted with these terrible tendencies in this country and I began to think that I want to do what Woody Guthrie or Charlie Poole did or what some old blues singer might have done, which is to talk about their life through song. It's one of the great things that American music is, or was.
You could say it's a call to action, which Pete Seeger used to say it was. He would sing a song to an audience, and this instantaneous transformation would occur into a mood and emotional tone of solidarity and unity and kinship. It's a tremendous thing.
Q: You're critical of the current state of the music industry. What are you listening to right now?
A: What I do to soothe my shattered nerves is listen to classical most of the time because it's very spacious, it isn't demanding, and it contains all the good stuff that I like -- mostly the French impressionists like Ravel and Debussy and cats like that. It's visual and depicts nature in a healthy way that I find comforting. I also listen to Mexican music a lot of the time -- boleros and the romantic stuff because I really love the melodies. It's very charming, and it suits my fondness for the period sound.
Q: Have you reached a point as a guitarist where you feel satisfied with your own playing?
A: Right now I am, as of making this particular record. It's not because of the record, but more the timing -- where I am along my path. I'm playing what I like. Instead of saying there's a certain amount of frustration or that something's missing, I'm playing good stuff and I can hear it, and I'm not struggling with anything anymore.
Q: Every time I advance musically, I feel progress but I also become aware of a larger universe of possibilities.
A: Luckily it doesn't have to stop. You can just keep going, and it sounds better all the time. As people get older they get better, or more interesting anyway. The emphasis becomes more about expression and awareness than speed and technique. I'm a big fan of (Hawaiian guitarist) Gabby Pahinui. The older he got, the more meaningful everything was -- the more that was being said with each note.
Q: Do you still practice? What are you working on right now?
A: Every day. As much as I can stand to sit around and play. I got this great mandolin from a guy up in Canada who makes these incredible f-hole mandolins, and it's so magnificent that I've been playing it all the time.
Q: What's next?
A: I don't know what comes next. ... I also have a paperback book of my L.A. stories that is coming out in a couple of weeks. That's not so much a career move as something I like to do, so what the heck? Projectwise, I couldn't say. You never know. I don't need to be all scoped out. I don't plan well, so I just wait and see.

Lady Gaga And Her Little Sister, Natali Germanotta To Launch Clothing Line

Butchers beware, the meat dress is about to be the most requested dress of the season, at least if one lady has anything to do with it.

Lady Gaga is bringing her sister act center stage launching a clothing line with her lil sis Natali Germanotta. Natali, known as Baby Gaga to all the little monsters, shares her sister’s flair for the dramatic. The 19-year-old freshman fashion student at Parsons has already made a name for herself designing costumes for the upcoming off-Broadway production Simon Says.

If you are expecting a bubble dress, a frock covered in Kermit The Frog puppets or an incubator egg bag, think again. According to U.K. publication Grazia the clothing line will be “relatively normal and wearable.” The theme that Gaga has in mind is “to remodel the styles of classic icons from the past, for example, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Katherine Hepburn” but the glamorous styles will each come with a twist—like the white Marilyn dress made up in kinky rubber.”

This isn’t Gaga’s first forray into fashion. The diva created designs for her littlest of monsters when she debuted her “Gaga Goo Goo” clothing line for babies on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Actually it was a cute joke but we kinda wish it wasn’t. Those pee-wee platforms are fierce!
